Send a Google Chat to the Future!

With so much information to share throughout the workday, tools like Google Chat have no trouble proving their worth. That being said, there are niche use cases that many might assume are beyond the capabilities of Google Chat and its ilk… for instance, scheduling a message to be sent at a later date.

As it turns out, Google Chat has this exact ability, hidden in plain sight.

How to Schedule a Message to Be Sent at a Later Time/Date in Google Chat

First, open Google Chat and select the conversation you want to schedule the message for. For this example, we’ll assume that our coworker Saul has asked us to remind him of a task at a certain time. Why Saul couldn’t give himself this reminder is anyone’s guess, but Google Chat provides a way to do your coworker this favor without troubling yourself unduly.

Once you have your conversation with Saul open, type out the message you want to send him. 

For our purposes, let’s assume Saul wanted a reminder to submit his expense reports at the end of the day this coming Friday, and he decided to put this responsibility on your shoulders on Tuesday. Once you’ve drafted your message in the provided “Message Saul” bar, pause.

Rather than clicking the right-facing arrow to send your message, click the smaller button next to it with its arrow pointing down.

You’ll see a few options in the menu that opens, allowing you to send your message…

“Tomorrow at 8:00 AM”
“Tomorrow at 1:00 PM”
“Next Monday at 8:00 AM”

In addition, you can also “Pick a custom time,” which allows you to select the precise date and time your message will be sent. You can even stack messages to be sent… and if something needs to change after you’ve confirmed the message, you can simply select See all scheduled messages to review and revise them!
